Family Day Image 5

White Rock Museum & Archives hosted its second “Family Day” on Sunday April 29th. The weather was very cooperative so we were able to incorporate a number of fun activities outside. The White Rock Youth Ambassadors participated by overseeing the children’s craft area, our wonderful volunteer, Annabelle, showed her talents with amazing face painting for the children, and we received a visit from the White Rock Fire Department with one of their trucks that the children were able to tour. Inside, visitors were treated to our current exhibit “Emergency and Everyday Assistance: A History of Fire Rescue in White Rock” with tours being led by our volunteer docent, Debbie. A great day was enjoyed by all.

Anne Murray

Aug. 26, 2012 at 1:00pm

Anne Murray lives in Tsawwassen British Columbia and has had a lifelong interest in birds, nature, history and different cultures. A few years ago, she saw that there was no comprehensive guide to the Boundary Bay area and produced two books for those interested in learning more about the history and natural environment in their own backyards. These guides, available in our Museum Shop are titled

  • Tracing Our Past: A Heritage Guide to Boundary Bay

  • A Nature Guide to Boundary Bay

Educated in England in Physics and Geology, she has long had a passion for sharing her knowledge of the natural world with people of all ages. She has been a volunteer with many environmental groups including Nature Canada, BC Nature, Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, and is a recipient of the Queens Golden Jubilee medal. Anne will present an illustrated talk, utilizing photographs from David Blevins while drawing upon these guides to explore the story of our local landscape and the people who have transformed it. From Coast Salish to multicultural explorers, settlers, fishers, farmers, developers, naturalists, and conservationists, she will reveal the relationships that built the area of Semiahmoo Bay and Beyond. She will also speak about the unique environmental diversity of the area connecting BC and Washington. From bird migration to life in the intertidal zone, join us as Anne reveals the secrets of this dramatic and diverse coastal landscape!

Volunteer Appreciation Evening
The Event

On a rainy evening in November, we were pleased to host our annual VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION EVENING at the museum, recognizing those valued folks who had volunteered 50 hours or more of their time over the past calendar year or assisted us in some significant way. Over the course of the evening, volunteers helped to create a “snowflake hand collage” for the front window of the museum, enjoyed a visit from Santa (Board Member Mardon Mack) who helped to award special volunteer pins and certificates, and dined on a lovely Chinese food dinner. Several Society Board Members were also in attendance to thank the volunteers for their outstanding service to the Museum, including Marilena Fluckiger, Colleen Kerr, Karin Bjerke-Lisle, Donna Mendes-Frobb, Mardon Mack, and City of White Rock Museum Representative Laurae McNally.

Our gallery was transformed for the evening into a winter wonderland of snowflakes, twinkling trees and beautiful decorations with the great efforts of Society President Marilena Fluckiger, Board Member Donna Mendes-Frobb, and key volunteer Annabelle Lowe. Peter Fluckiger, Harry Butler-Smythe, Lauren Boni, Elsa Wong and others also helped with the event preparations. Several wonderful sponsors contributed to the success of the event including Pearl Restaurant, Judy Sydenham (Greenside Design), Thrifty’s Food, Laura’s Fashion Fabrics and Backyard Vineyards.

If you would like to volunteer with us we have many opportunities! Positions are available in the areas of the Museum Shop, Collections/Exhibits, Archives, Fundraising, programs for school aged children through Seniors, the Art Wall Program, Special Events or in our Administration Area. Contact Lauren at 604.541.2222 or e-mail to find out more information. In addition to acknowledgement at our Volunteer Appreciation Event, those contributing 50 hours or more in a calendar year receive a free Museum membership with benefits, invitations to special events, recognition on our Volunteer bubble plaque in the admittance area, volunteer pins and certificates, and more.
