Baskets!! Fibrous Functional and Fabulous

September 8 - October 8, 2012

Baskets Image

The White Rock Museum is thinking "Outside the Box" by celebrating the fabulous flexibility of this functional art form through an exhibit showcasing some of the basketry from our museum’s collection. Currently the White Rock Museum & Archives houses almost 700 artifacts from the collection of Irene McCaud, a local scholar and collector. This exhibit is one of many venues for White Rock's annual "Outside the Box" Festival that celebrates fibre in its many forms, from fine art to functional. In 2002, two University of Victoria students took on a project to analyze this collection of baskets to identify the regional styles and plant materials used in their construction. Expanding upon this research, our exhibit will showcase baskets that are representative of many BC First Nations’ knowledge, skill and artistry. Baskets are more than just collection and storage objects; they are deeply rooted in cultural environments. As representations of cultural metamorphosis, they illustrate artistic and technical skill while also demonstrating social and political relationships between and amongst the people of British Columbia. Come discover what baskets are really made of!

Remembrance Day Exhibit

November 3rd - 18th, 2012

The war years seriously affected the lives of all Canadians. Thousands of fathers, husbands, sons, mothers and daughters served their country. Some were killed in action, others wounded – many returned changed forever. Those who stayed home in White Rock also served: in the workforce, in convalescence, in voluntary service organizations – wherever they were needed. We invite you to explore the history of White Rock at war through artifacts from the Museum’s collection, archival photos and drawings, and a series of letters sent to and from Canadians at war.
